Many online sellers who follow my blog ask me: Which features of my ecommerce website help me convert visitors into customers the most?
While my website has all the basic features that people look for when shopping online, some of these features are my absolute favourites.
I love these features because they generate leads for my business and help me with conversions.
So without further ado, let’s discuss what these features are and how they are helping me to grown my eCommerce business:
There are many platforms you can use for communicating with your customers.
- Social media
- Customer service live chat apps
While all these platforms are good enough, my favourite one is WhatsApp.
I have WhatsApp button on every page of my eCommerce website.
In fact, the potential customers can skip the ‘Add to Cart’ process and place an order directly on WhatsApp.
Before placing the order, they can initiate a chat and have their queries answered, so that they are fully satisfied.
I recently wrote a blog on how to avoid waste of time when communicating with your customers. Check out this article before using this feature on your website.
I prefer WhatsApp because everyone in India uses it. Besides, our brand is not as big as Myntra, Flipkart or Amazon. By encouraging customers to initiate a chat and ask questions, we try to win their trust first.
Once we are a big brand, we will probably remove this feature.
How fast an eCommerce website loads can have a huge deal of impact on conversion rates.
I put a lot of emphasis on the website load speed whether it is my own website or that of my clients.
Let’s compare the speed of my website with Myntra.com.
I use Google PageSpeed Insight tool to find out the speed of any website.
Using this tool, let’s see how fast a product page from my website loads and then compare it with a product page on Myntra.com.
Here is the speed score for a product page on the mobile version of my website:
Here is the speed score for the product page on the desktop version of my eCommerce website:

As you can see my website loads faster than even Myntra.com.
A lot of factors go into determining how fast your website loads:
- Which hosting service you are using for your website.
- HTML, CSS and JS coding
- And image optimization
It’s technical stuff so I won’t go into details, but when you hire a developer and designer for building your eCommerce website you should tell them that the product page load speed is your number – 1 priority. If your developer can’t deliver on this, either you have chosen a bad hosting service or the developer is not up to his or her job.
If your website doesn’t load fast, all your efforts to market your eCommerce business will go in vain.
Check-out process and page design
While the eCommerce is growing at an exponential rate in India, the hard reality is that most people still don’t know how to place an order on an online store.
It is for this reason that I try to make sure the checkout process is intuitive and easy to follow.
Here are a few rules of thumb I follow to make the checkout process smooth and hassle-free:
- Since the shipping is free (included in the price), my customers are not in for a shock on the checkout page. I have seen my online sellers to keep the purchase price low on the cart page but add an unexpectedly high shipping charge on the checkout page. Your customers will feel betrayed if you follow this strategy.
- I use all most popular payment methods including Paytm and PayUMoney enabling my customers to pay through netbanking, UPI or credit/debit cards. You must ensure you give all the most prevalent payment options to your customers.
- I make sure the product page has important information prominently displayed including my offers (such as easy returns, free shipping, cash-on-delivery, any offers or discounts and a wide range of payment methods).
So there are some of the features on my online store website which I absolutely love.
Keep in mind that it is very important to win the trust of your customers if you are launching a new eCommerce website.
You should make it easier for your customers to reach out to you in case they have any queries. It is equally important that you promptly respond to their concerns and feedback.
Also, make the checkout process as smooth and hassle-free as possible. Don’t go overboard with design. Stick to only the most essential elements so that the product pages look clutter-free and don’t confuse your customers.
